Coastal Chaos: Tsunami Alarms Blaze

Two massive earthquakes struck Venezuela within seconds of each other, killing at least 188 people, leaving over 40,000 missing, and turning entire neighborhoods into rubble — and the death toll may climb much higher.

Story Snapshot

  • A 7.2 and a 7.5 magnitude earthquake hit northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026, just 39 seconds apart, centered near Morón — west of Caracas.
  • At least 188 people are confirmed dead, more than 1,520 are injured, and over 40,000 are reported missing.
  • The La Guaira coastal state was declared a disaster zone, with 250 buildings damaged or destroyed and nearly 3,000 families left homeless.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) damage model estimated a 37% chance the final death toll could reach between 10,000 and 100,000.

Back-to-Back Quakes Rock Northern Venezuela

Two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela on the evening of June 24, 2026. The first measured 7.2 in magnitude and hit at a depth of about 13 kilometers (8 miles). Just 39 seconds later, a larger 7.5 magnitude quake struck 16 kilometers southwest of Morón, according to the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program. Both quakes were shallow and close to populated areas, which made the shaking far more destructive than a deeper quake of the same size would be.

Tsunami alerts were issued after the quakes, adding fear along Venezuela’s coastline. The epicenter of the initial event was located about 28 kilometers northwest of Montalban — roughly an hour’s drive west of the capital, Caracas. Residents across the region reported violent shaking, collapsing walls, and chaos in the streets. International news agencies described widespread panic in Caracas as people fled buildings and searched for loved ones.

Confirmed Deaths, Injuries, and Thousands Missing

As of June 25, 2026, at least 188 people were confirmed dead and more than 1,520 were injured, according to Reuters and Al Jazeera. The most alarming figure is the number of missing: over 40,000 people are unaccounted for. Rescuers were digging through rubble by hand in some areas, searching for survivors trapped under collapsed buildings. Acting President Delcy Rodriguez declared La Guaira state a formal disaster zone.

The USGS modeled the likely human impact of the 7.5 magnitude quake. Their Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) system estimated a 39% chance of 1,000 to 10,000 deaths and a 37% chance of 10,000 to 100,000 deaths. These are not guarantees — they are probability ranges — but they signal that early casualty counts may be just the beginning. Venezuela’s crumbling infrastructure and aging buildings made the region especially vulnerable to this kind of disaster.

Widespread Destruction and a Country Ill-Equipped to Cope

At least 250 buildings were damaged or destroyed, leaving close to 3,000 families without homes, Reuters reported. Venezuela has suffered years of economic collapse under socialist mismanagement, leaving hospitals understaffed, roads broken, and emergency services underfunded. That reality makes a disaster like this far deadlier than it might be elsewhere. Relief organizations noted that official casualty information remained limited in the hours after the quake, with significant aftershocks still expected.

Rescue teams, including some international responders, moved into the hardest-hit areas. Israel was among the countries reported to have sent personnel on the ground quickly. The scale of the missing — more than 40,000 — points to the possibility that entire communities in coastal and mountain areas may have been cut off or buried. As search efforts continued, officials warned that the confirmed death toll would almost certainly rise. The world is watching a nation already on its knees face one of its worst natural disasters in modern history.
